Hello there,
I'm reaching out from those lost-in-limbo days between holidays, when many of us are in a combination of resting, trying accomplish something, and recovering from illnesses caught at the gatherings.
I'm feeling eager to get started on my plans, but still held here, forced into stillness, forced to wait just another moment before bursting into the new year.
Things often take longer than I want them to. I know that, and yet the slowness is confronting.
Do you feel plans and dreams simmering in these sleepy days? Or are you forced into movement when you'd rather be resting?
My wish for you, today, is that you find the stillness you need.
And while you linger in these slow days, here are upcoming events to contemplate:
The Live run of 13 starts on Monday!
If you want to learn about herbs next year, but also feel overwhelmed at the prospect, join me for this class! I've created this course to be as actionable, bite-sized, and non-overwhelming as possible. You can take this course any time, but if you join by Monday, January 5th you can receive the lessons "live" as part of a cohort and chat with me about herbs for 4 whole months.

Herbal Reset for Winter Wellness at Grounds for Sculpture
Join me for a class of simmering decoctions and spicy blends. We'll talk about herbs for immune health, creative ways of keeping illness at bay, and you'll make a blend to take home.
Saturday, January 24th, 1:00-3:00pm
Check out all my upcoming classes here.
The January class in Herbs for Living is "Herbs for Manifesting" so if you want magical/herbal help with your 2026 plans, join us.
NOFA NJ Conference
I'll be teaching at the NOFA NJ Conference this year! I'll be teaching a hands-on workshop on making herbal oxymels and other value-added products, and I'll be serving up mocktails during happy hour! My husband John will be on a panel about CSA farms.
I'm thrilled that The Moth will be presenting the keynote this year -- all about storytelling! It's going to be a great weekend, and I'd love to see you there.
Community Bulletins
- If you've taken a class with me, you've probably heard me mention my very good friend Mare McClellan, who's taught me so much about plants and life. Mare has the incredible ability to be slow with plants and truly notice insect-plant interactions. She's also an incredible artist, and her recent collection is inspired by the relationship between Dogbane (Apocynum cannibium) and the Dogbane Tiger Moth aka Delicate Cycnia. She was recently interviewed on The Wildstory Podcast of the NJ Native Plant Society.
- My friend Sheila Masterson's latest book The Poison Daughter has ranked #1 Enemies-to-lovers romance on Amazon, and I'm so proud of her I'm telling everyone. Check it out!
yours in stillness,
Amanda
P.S. Here's what students have said about 13:
Though I’ve been practicing herbalism for about 5 years or so, I didn’t feel very confident. I was in my mid-50s when I “discovered” it via accidentally falling into some rabbit holes... The educational style you embrace is so comfortable and relatable. ... Thirteen is a perfect number of herbs on which to focus, particularly if you’re serious about making them a real part of your daily life. I love the magickal discussion as well, but if that’s not your thing, it’s easy to skip over it. Your pacing is spot on, allowing adult learners with busy lives to readily incorporate the practice into their schedules. I highly recommend this and every course Amanda offers.

When I saw this offering pop up in my email I knew I’d have to take it. I definitely “fell behind” but because this is a self-paced class, it didn’t matter and I caught up when I had the time. Just before I began 13, I actually started up a tiny herbal business from home. These weekly nuggets of information and inspiration really helped me along with that! It kept me experimenting and using herbs in new ways I hadn’t before, as well as giving me the confidence to share herbs with my community and answer questions that arise from those unfamiliar with herbs. Ultimately, I just really like having Locust Light in my inbox! 100% recommend to aspiring herbalists, those who dabble but lack confidence with herbs, even those like me who have taken more in-depth courses but enjoy a refresher and a new perspective. It would also be perfect for an absolute beginner! Thank you Amanda for another great course.
